Another Great Success
BioMarin sponsored a PKU Cooking Workshop on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the new UT Culinary Arts Institute on Neyland Drive in Knoxville. Designed for the culinary program, the foodservice equipment provided a place for our families to cook together in a commercial kitchen!  Bridget Reineking, MS, RD, CD of Medical College of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital spoke about nutrition and medical therapy for PKU. The presentation was interactive with lots of great questions and issues from the audience particularly on reasons why PKU patients need to drink their formulas and search out nutrient-dense foods. Erica Stelten spoke about Kuvan and briefly about the new phe meter which is still in production, but will not be out as soon as thought originally. Following was an excellent low phe cooking demonstration by Chef Jason Wyrick from Phoenix, Arizona. Chef Jason helped everyone cook in groups with new recipes for scrumptious “meatballs” and “sloppy joes” among some wonderful fruit and vegetable dishes including sweet potato fries….yum! Cooking with new fresh herbs really made the food very tasty and gave everyone some new ideas. We were then able to eat our cooking from the various recipes.

It was such a great learning opportunity for all of us and it allowed more families the opportunity to build our PKU community.
