Tennessee PKU Foundation News
Annual Meeting Was Great Success
Written by Bryon McDowell
Saturday, 28 January 2012

The Tennessee PKU Foundation held their annual meeting on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at FiftyForward Martin Center in Brentwood and had around 150 participants (if not more).  This is our yearly event where we spend time with the larger community and enjoy fun events.  Erica Stelten from BioMarin presented “There’s More To Food Than Phe”, Natalie Owen discussed the studies Vanderbilt is offering (including the phe monitor) and Lynn Paoella discussed the PKU recipes she prepared for our PKU participants which included Italian wedding soup with ‘meatballs’, tomato/basil bruschetta, toasted ravioli and cookie sandwich for dessert.  We also held our interactive succession with the panel of individuals with PKU and parent of an individual with PKU to share their stores, ideas with the groups, as well as answering questions.  The panel included 2 adults with PKU, 2 teenagers with PKU and a mom of a young child with PKU.  Many thanks to Lynn Paoella from Cambrooke flying down and making us some incredible Italian recipes, as well as to the following companies for their contributions:  Applied Nutrition, BioMarin, Cambrooke, Vitaflo, PKU Perspectives, Patient Power, Nutricia and Taste Connections.

The Tennessee PKU Foundation wants to let everyone that BioMarin is going sponsoring a PKU Cooking Event in Memphis on Saturday, February 11, 2012.  The event will be held at L’Ecole Culinaire at 1245 North Germantown Pkwy in Cordova.  The event will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. central time.  You will be receiving something from your clinic if you live in the Memphis area and go to clinic there but everyone is welcome if you wish to travel to the event.  To register you may visit website www.pkuevent.com/mem or call Symbiotix at 800-396-9577.

Low phe lunch will be provided and there is no cost to attend the event.  There is a limit of 3 family members and/or caregivers per PKU patient.  Please register for this event & mark your calendars.  There were multiple cooking workshops last year in Tennessee and all of them were great successes and places to learn some wonderful new recipes.  So mark your calendars, register and come out & join us for a great event. See the attached PDF for more information on the event.
